The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry
Pat Cummins has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.
The Australian chair of selectors Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming England-Australia contest.
There were concerns that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.
Previous updates from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches set to start on November 21 in the WACA.
The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the prospects of taking part.
"It's clear that time is getting short and various factors at play, not only the back issue, but other factors as well," he commented.
"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he will feature a significant role. Ideally it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."
Previous Setbacks
He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.
There is a track record of back injuries, with recurrences in multiple past seasons causing him to miss three Australian summers in a short span.
He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the contest.
He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.
Alternative Arrangements
Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.
The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.
The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."
"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.
"His involvement was limited to the starting games in any case. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
